The rescued letter of Mahatama Gandhi
A rare letter by Gandhi weeks before his assassination was saved from an auction by the Indian Government. The contents of the letter are most interesting. The great old man of India calling for tolerance towards Muslims..! A forgotten leaf of history by many especially the bigots in India.
This document was written on 11 January 1948, 19 - only some days prior to that tragic murder at the hands of a Hindu fanatic Nathuram Godse , who expressed his anger against Muslims and Gandhi’s peaceful politics with violence. Alas, Godses have grown in number (and some would say their mirror images - the Islamic extremists have also prospered).
Getting back to the letter:
”In it Gandhi calls on his Muslim friends to support the Urdu edition of his publication, Harijan, after realising that it would have to cease due to dwindling demand.
He says any suggestion of a boycott on Urdu is a “wanton affront upon the Muslims of the Union who in the eyes of many Hindus have become aliens in their own land.”
Thank God that this letter would go back to India and not become part of someone’s closet of avarice or worse vanity. In particular its contents necessitate that the younger generations should know where we all started from.
Another update here.
