The teachings of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

1. The heart of a lover is like a furnace of love. Whatever goes into it is burnt to nothingness because there is no fire like the fire of love.
2. The way of love is such that no trace remains of the one who sets out to it.
3. From the lips of an ‘aref one hears naught but the remembrance (dhekr) of God.
4. The first sign of an ‘aref is that (s)he begins to despise possessions and wealth.
5. Even if one would give up both worlds in the friendship of the Friend, that would be a small thing.
6. Though the lovers are cut off in love, they choose to do the work of people who, in sleeping and in waking, are seeking for the Beloved, and who having done with the formal aspect of friendship are absorbed in the contemplation of the Friend.
7. The Beloved Himself sees the lover’s longing; the way of love is a matter of supplication.
8. An ‘aref is (s)he who strives to achieve ‘one breath’. The breath of the ‘aref is such that it performs the remembrance (dhekr) of God and the ‘aref sacrifices his (her) whole life for this one breath. If such a breath be achieved this is a matter of great fortune, because even by seeking for such a breath in heaven and on earth, and year after year, it cannot easily be obtained.

  3. As a professor of religious history, I am constantly amazed at how thoroughly Indian the Chisthi-variety of Sufism is. These words could have been written by a Buddhist saint in 600 BC, or by a Vedantic sage of the Upanishads in 1300 BC, or a Bhakti saint of Tamil Nadu in the 6th century AD. That explains why Sufism co-existed with the myriad other Indian religous forms in total peace for a thousand years. And, also why so many Indians were attracted to Sufism in the first place.

Sufism of the subcontinental variety shows a fusion that just fits seamlessly into the thousands of years of Indian metaphysical framework. Perhaps that is not surprising given that the people from the Afghanistan, Central Asia, Pakistan and India that form the cradle of Sufism were followers of Buddhism, Hinduism and other subcontinental religous forms prior to the advent of Islam, resulting in the carry-over of ideas into Sufism.

  4. dea raza saheb, agar aap kuchh sadi pahle paida hote to zuroor kisi khanqah mein paye jate!

  5. really touching and deep thinking can not be aproached by an ordinary person at all may Allah bless all of us

  6. Ms. Shama Zaidi : Aaj bhee Khaan-khwaah mein ho saktey hain.. lekin Aaj hamko Khaan-Khwaah ka “swarup” badalna hoga. Aaj ki Khaan-Khwaah hai : Ek badiya., standard kaa K-12 High School. Yeh grass roots kaam hai. Ab to khair, Pakistaan hungaami halaat mein hai (Emergency)… lekin… halaat normal hone ke baad.. Agar Allah chaahe.. aur halaat mayassar hon… THEN, Mr. Raza Rumi Saheb must think of establishing a Quality High School (K-12) in Pakistan… in a place of his choice… 5 acres of land… 1 block of buildings (2 cr)… and then build the institution… in 10-20 years… and leave it as your legacy… This is my prayer.. dua.. aspiration.. We need Institutions… it leads to “Multiplier effects” in bringing about Social (and also Economic) Change in Society.

Maybe I am dreaming at the wrong time… but man lives on hope !
