In 2006, I read this brilliant poem by Brijinder”Sagar (found here on Adnan’s brilliant site). I had kept it with me for an adequate translation. I have been unable to do justice and therefore I will rework my draft to post here. In the meantime, this poem will be accessible to Urdu-Hindustani speakers. This poem is about bigotry and extremism in the name of religion that has overtaken India as well as other South Asian countries. Pakistan is no exception and Bangladesh is also witnessing the rise of Islamism, though not as alarming as India and Pakistan. Sri Lanka has also seen ethnic warfare, different in its manifestation but akin to the violence and death that comes in its wake. In such a charged environment, voices for peace are delightful.

I was moved by the beautiful words of appreciation for my poem.I hope this poem lingers in the minds of readers for quite some time and may perhaps be a catalyst for a serious and honest introspection of our own prejudices and conditionings. Bigotry and hatred has been made respectable by our few intellectuals who believe in the supremacy of their own religion and culture-Hindus,muslims,sikhs,christians alike.

Brijinder Sagar places humanity “manavata” over everything else. However, i am sorry to say, whenever the atmosphere gets a little positive., there is a bomb blast ! After 90-year old hate-monger Bal Thackerey got a stinging slap from the people over his “ulta-chor-kotwal ko daante” attitude against Shah Rukh Khan, i was expecting some ugly news. My Name Is Khan + the upcoming Secretary Level Indo-Pak talks scheduled 25 Feb 2010., and lo and behold… there is a bomb blast in Pune. Is this the work of Abhinav Bharat., RSS., Sleeper cells of Hindutva-terrorism. Will truth ever surface., or will it be buried like the blasts in Malegaon., the blasts in Nanded (in the home of VHP leaders)., and Parbhani ! People should write on the dangerous menace of HINDUTVA TERRORISM. R.S.S. which is the world’s largest terrorist organisation. It has 100,000 Schools where hatred is indoctrinated., and where terrorists are manufactured ! How much does the world know about RSS and the dirty work it has been doing since 1928. It is time to highlight and throw the flood-light on what RSS has been doing. Time to lift the black curtain over RSS.
There is always a blast (1) before Indo-Pak talks begin and (2) before any high US Dignitary arrives in India. Why ? Why is the culprit never caught ? Who is responsible for these blasts. RSS / VHP / Shiv Sena / Abhinav Bharat / etc. Will someone highlight HINDUTVA TERRORISM., and the record of RSS 1928-2010 ! The dirty work RSS has been doing for the past 80 yrs or so. I think that the blaming game is the root cause of our problems.Let us face very honestly that neither RSS,Bajrang dal,shiv sena or any other party with religious bias has the same preducie and hate level as any mujahideen or muslim bigots.I raise my voice against all the religious bigots,including from my own religion.
Brijinder : This is not a contest on who is more lethal and more evil. EVIL is EVIL., whatever the color of the criminal’s dress (be it safforn or green). I want to rise above symbolism and catch the culprit. In my humble opinion, RSS is more sophisticated (with its tentacles.. the Sangh Parivar has 52 outfits… should i name them ?); with its 100,000+ schools (Saraswati Vidya Mandirs)., and a host of organisations (at the grass-root level), literally poisoning young minds and turning Hindus into lethal missiles… to be used as and when required to kill / rape indian muslims. So while Al Qaida (or is it Al-Faida) is definitely evil., and reprehensible, they are crude and un-sophisticated. RSS is 1 million times more dangerous than all Mullahs + Al Qaida put together. I am saying this from a vantage point. From a civilisational point of view. From a Millenia-point of view. I hope u reflect on what i say.. rationally.. scientifically.. and arrive at ur own conclusions. Look at the work they have done 1928-2010. The mullahs (even in their criminality) are infants., compared to RSS. Very touching and moving poetry. It came from the heart and speaks straight to the heart. Brijnder is a very fine and sensitive human being and no one could have put it better or more aptly.

Mr.Dastgir,I want to clarify certain things as you seem to be obsessed with the thought that RSS is the root cause of all evils.Firstly,RSS ,fortunately,does not speak for the majority of the Hindus.It is in India that movies like Parzania,Hey ram,My name is Khan,Amu ,Dev etc could be made which boldly question the role of religious bigotry and hatred in politics and point a clear finger to hate groups like RSS,Shiv sena etc.Moreover all these movies are made by courageous Hindus who refuse to buckle under pressure.How many in Pakistan can you name who are so openly against the politics of hatred in the name of religion??(NO OFFENCE,my Friend!!!)
I still remember the day when Babri masjid was demolished by the hijackers of Himdu religion-BJP etc.Vivek,my friend who has commented here,was very distraught that day and said to me that he was ashamed to be a Hindu.That single comment was enough to express the anguish of millions of sensitive Hindus all over India.
Secondly,my poem,Mazhub,was written when sikh religion was hijacked by few hate mongrels and there was a reign of terror in punjab and innocent hindus were being killed almost daily by them.That poem was the cry of anguish as I am a sikh by birth and was ashamed by such acts.
So Mr.Dastgir,as i said earlier that if we really want a solution then we must be ready to confront the our conditioning within and stop looking for justifications. Having lived in India with open eyes,I can assure you that despite the persistent propaganda of RSS and likes, majority of the people there still are decent people.
I ask you if you really have the moral courage to openly come out against the hijackers of Islam-taliban,mujahideen,al-quaida and its numerous groups??

Hi Brijinder… you indeed are a “Sagar” of love. I appreciate your humane-ness and salute it. I am as secular (if not more) as you are. I was completely distressed when the crude Taliban demolished the Buddha Statues in Bamiyaan. I believe in preserving history, antiquities for posterity… not demolishing them.. or burning libraries.
I do not want to discuss with a Beauty-Contest mindset. Fundamentalism / Religious bigotry is WORST than Aids. Yes., Parzania, MNIK, Ghaayal etc. were movies made by Hindus. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra also made Rang De Basanti., a movie that i love.
Yes.. i am obsessed with RSS.. cuz RSS has hijacked Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) and turned it into a Taliban-type thing (Taliban+Idol worship), re-writing history, encouraging rape and murder to blend and form Hindu Society (Samaaj Ka Nirmaan…). I know there are good hindus who understand the dirty game RSS and its hydra-headed monster (52 organisations, 100,000 schools, 2500 vernacular newspapers, etc. etc.) is playing. RSS/VHP will destroy eclectic Hinduism., the way Taliban/Fundamentalists will destroy the pristine beauty of Islam.
You say RSS is a fringe-element… Sorry, Brijinder… RSS is not a fringe element. It is ruling 7 states (provinces) in India. Look at their vote-share. They have a presence from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Communal parties never polled more than 4% in Theocratic Pakistan. RSS (read BJP) is ruling 7 states in “secular” India. It is this paradox that is at the root of the argument.
India will be destroyed by RSS., as much as the glaring reality that Pakistan would be destroyed by misguided fundamentalists.
Why have fundamentalists (RSS/Taliban) become so strong ? It is because the systems have crumbled since 1970. The systemic BREAKDOWN. Failure of Governance and Government. The entry of “corruption”. Mrs. Indira Gandhi destroyed the fine institutions built by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. She destroyed the pillars on which India stood. To this date., we are suffering for the “original” sins introduced into India’s body-politic by Mrs. Gandhi… and today.. Advani is praising Indira while criticising Nehru. WHY ? Because Mrs. Indira Gandhi was more RSS than Advani himself. RSS proliferated under Indira’s tutelege. Indira was more RSS than Sushma Swaraj (but a sophisticated version).
RSS poses a danger to India and Hindu Dharma (in the long term). However it may provide cheap thrill (rape/murder) to hindus in the short-term. RSS has turned India’s democracy into a mobocracy.
Who is more powerful ? Mallika Sarabhai or Maya Kodnani ? Harsh Mandar or Babu Bajrangi ? Arundhati Roy or Sadhvi Pragya ? Swami Agnivesh or Lt. Col. Purohit. What is Himani Savarkar (Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s grand-daughter) doing… planning more bomb attacks. What is taught in 100,000 Saraswati Shishu Mandirs thru-out India ? What is taught at Bhonsle Military School, Nagpur/Pune. Does anyone care ?
The Taliban are equally bad… no denying that… but they do not have the intact-infrastructure that RSS has. The taliban / fundamentalist elements in Pakistan and elsewhere are equally condemnable. No partialities here. Those who destroy schools, do not deserve any mercy… cuz SCHOOLS are temples of learning.
Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) had said : “Ana Mo`allim al Insaniyya”. I am a teacher sent unto mankind to “Guide”. Quran contains “Aayaat”.. that means “Signs”… it is Noor… that is “light”… it guides… One has to read the “SIGNS”… each according to the “holding ability” of his / her own soul.
What have muslims turned Islam into… Some barbaric ideology. If you want to read and understand the HEART of Islam, read Annemarie Schimmel… read Rumi. Unfortunately, Advani and RSS intend to destroy Hindu DHARMA too, the way muslim fundamentalists are distorting the fair name of Islam.

I agree that BJP is ruling in more states than it ever did but my friend,dont you agree that it has nothing to do with their ideology and more to do with general public’s dissatisfaction with the ruling party and they want to another? I have lived in India for 45 years and I have been involved in social causes and social works of Lajpat Bhawan at Chandigarh.I never had the experience to feel that the majority or for that matter,overwhelming number if Hindus are firm believers of RSS.

Dear Brijinder : Yes.. i am an Indian., but before that I am human… and i want to retain that “order”. Thanks indeed for an heart-felt reply . I have tomes and tons buried under my chest. Not fantasy., but real life incidents. Are you willing to listen to real-life stories. Do you have the time to verify the veracity of what i say ! Who has the time. Of what use is it now. Time erases good and bad memories, so they say. Its a long story, Brijinder. It goes back to 1857. It goes back to the advent of “Britain”. Divide & Rule. The 2 major communities recognised as such. The 1st Census. The figures. The disparities. The lower castes (and the varuna-ashrama within hinduism)., and of course contemporary history of india (over the past hundred years). Then comes the modern phase. Awareness. Arrival of Mr. Gandhi from South Africa., and the moment he arrives he speaks the language of divisiveness and hatred. “I am so glad that a MUSLIM is a President of the Gujjar Samaaj”. (A reception was honored to welcome him from S. Africa., and it was presided by its President., Mr. M.A. Jinnah !… circa 1920s). There is a history of hatred. There are no angels on either side. It was about discovering new identity and coping up with new realities. In 1901, Urdu was replaced by Hindi (Devnagri) as the Official Language… then there was the Bengal problem. (United Bengal was 60:40 Muslim:Hindu.. a delicate balance); United Punjab presented a similar scenario with Muslim:Sikh:Hindu ratios… Arya Samaj was born in Punjab. I am sure being a Punjabi, you know about LAL-BAL-PAL who first advocated partitioning the country (to get rid of muslim-majority areas) as early as 1920 ! I am sure you know about the advent of Arya Samaj, Lala Hansraj, Swami Dayanand Saraswati… etc. etc. and the environment all of this created. There IS a difference between Communalism of the Majority versus. The Communalism of the Minority. The latter is purely defensive… to protect its interests… whereas the former has the ability (capability) to destroy the latter’s interests.
I would place a MAJOR portion of the blame at the feet of Gandhi ji. For all his sweet talk, he was Narendra Modi of his age. BJP President Nitin Gadkari is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT (factually) when he says that Narendra Modi is the heir to Gandhi ji’s legacy. What was is Gandhi ji’s heart., is on Narendra Modi’s tongue. Narendra Modi is Gandhi ji … minus the mask (or cloak) of spirituality. Gandhi ji did immense damage to the social fabric of India. To the Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb of India.
But then., looking at it from the Hindu Perspective : You have to analyse and read the HINDU MIND. What was their viewpoint. Read B. Shiva Rao (Corr : The Hindu., circa 1940); or VP Menon, ICS., or Vallabhai Patel., K.M. Munshi., Swami Shraddhanand., K. B. Hegdewar., Golwalkar., (and go even further as 700 years if you want to.. by understanding the mind of NARSI MEHTA, the poet who “Vaishnava Janato” – Gandhi ji’s favourite Bhajan… try to understand the context in which Narsi Mehta used the word “Harijan”. He used that term to describe someone “bastard”., who did not know who his father was… It was much later when Bhimrao Ambedkar realised the real meaning of the word Harijan that he protested., and started using the word DALIT).
So., a lot of dirty work was done by Politicians who became custodians of RELIGIONS. India was a poor country., that had a philosophical bent of mind. Gandhiji understood India very well, and so he built himself as a religious person. Infact., he was a downright politician with a fraudulent spiritual cloak (that got exposed time and again in utter humiliation). The reality was constantly exposed.
Gandhi ji’s major contribution is not getting India its political independence. That came as early as 1935 (GOI 1935). Gandhiji’s major contribution (from the Hindu viewpoint); is to RID India of its Muslim influence. To cleanse India of its Muslim ethos and SYMBOLISM.
He succeeded in that. He willingly paid a price for it. Partition of the country., wherein millions died (pogrom/genocide/civil war… whatever). Gandhiji had said in 1946 at Kanpur : “What matters if a few lakhs die !”. This from the apostle of Ahimsa !
The Muslim response was equally naive. The Muslim leadership was not interested in religion, per se., but used the plank to consolidate ITS position as a response to Gandhiji’s challenge. Gandhi ji had built a SAFFORN PANDAL., so they built a GREEN PANDAL. The Muslim reaction was purely “responsive” in nature. They were not only economically backward (Muslims never controlled India’s economy… even during 700 yrs of rule by Kings who had Muslim names). The Indian Economy has always been in the hands of the Baniya (over the past 2000 yrs). They were academically backward. Hindus had advanced a century earlier. So all these differences., disparities., and hate-speech (Shuddhi-Sangathan); and its response., RSS and its private senas., Terrorism (Savarkar sending pistols by parcel (carved / hidden in hardbound books)… etc. etc. led to a point where the cauldron of hatred was at boiling point.
I would place 75% of the blame for raising the pitch at Gandhi ji’s door., and the remaining 25% at the feet of the leadership of the Muslim League. Unfortunately 75% Muslims of India were never asked how they felt. It is a BLUFF that all Indians (Muslims) were asked about their response to Pakistna in 1946. Dominion Of India became free in 1935. Gandhi ji worked hard for 12 years., to tear India apart. He was sincere in his pursuit., and he won it.
And Now : 2010. You mention Parzania. A great movie. But it ran for a week or so., in a few select theatres in India (Morning Show)… .compared to Anil Sharma’s “GADAR” (*ing Sunny Doel) that ran a Golden Jubilee. Why does the Indian public take to hate so easily..
Why 2 – 3 lakhs people attend a meeting addressed by Praveen Togadia compared to 200 if Harsh Mandar / Arundhati speak ? Are our masses violent. Have Hindus decided to demolish Islamic SYMBOLS on Indian soil, to build a NEW INDIAN idiom in its place. We have to probe the Hindu Mind. But who is nurturing the Hindu Mind and Hindu Thoughts..

Just today i came across one article by Kashmiri pundit.It has the same pathos as raised and felt by you.To me,as long as human being are here,we will have disparities.Muhajirs,sindhis etc in pakistans,hazaras in afghanistan,kurds in Iraq,shia sunni hatred,catholic-protestant divide-all are but few examples.If we penetrate a bit further,we will see divisions even with in these sub-sects.I do not contest your experiences of being muslim in India but then all of us carry such experiences at one or another level.When you listen to the ideologies of RSS and its ilk,they talk about jaziyas,forced conversions and complete dominance by Muslim rulers and their cohorts,forcning arabic and persian on Hindus,killings of thousands in most violent forms by the many Muslim invaders.They talk about enforcement of Islamic rules on non muslims living in Islamic countries,of being denied the raising of any non muslim religious structure in Saudi arabia and question that if Islamic states demand and enforce the Islamic laws then muslims should also comply with the laws of secular western countries.What if these countries ban mosques?That will be entirely reasonable,considering what Islamic states do.I mean we must be ready to listen to each other and try an honest bridge.The question is when to stop harping on these and try to build bridges.

I am not Khan. My name bears a different set of four letters: K A U L. Kaul. As those who know Indian names would understand I happened to be born in a family which was called Hindu by others. Hence, we were sure, we would never get a friend like KJ to make a movie on our humiliations, and the contemptuous and forced exile from our homeland. It’s not fashionable. It’s fashionable to get a Khan as a friend and portray his agony and pains and sufferings when he is asked by a US private to take off his shoes and show his socks. Natural and quite justifiable that Khan must feel insulted and enraged. Enough Masala to make a movie.
But unfortunately I am a Kaul. I am not a Khan.
Hence when my sisters and mothers were raped and killed, when six-year-old Seema was witness to the brutal slaughtering of her brother, mother and father with a butcher’s knife by a Khan, nobody ever came to make a movie on my agony, pain and anguish, and tears.
No KJ would make a movie on Kashmiri Hindus. Because we are not Khans. We are Kauls.
When we look at our own selves as Kauls, we also see a macabre dance of leaders who people Parliament. Some of them were really concerned about us. They got the bungalows and acres of greenery and had their portraits were worshipped by the gullible devotees of patriotism.
They made reservations in schools and colleges for us. In many many other states. But never did they try that we go back to our homes. They have other priorities and ‘love your jihadi neighborhood’ programmes. They get flabbier and flabbier with the passing of each year, sit on sacks of sermons; issue instructions to live simply and follow moral principles delivered by ancestors and kept in documents treated with time-tested preservatives.
They could play with me because my name is Kaul. And not Mr Khan. I saw the trailer to this fabulous movie, which must do good business at the box office.
There was not even a hint that terror is bad and it is worse if it is perpetuated in the name of a religion that means Peace. Peace be upon all its followers and all other the creatures too.
So you make a movie on the humiliation of taking off shoes to a foreign police force which has decided not to allow another 9/11.
The humiliation of taking off the shoes and the urge to show that you are innocent is really too deep. But what about the humiliation of leaving your home and hearth and the world and the relatives and wife and mother and father? And being forced to live in shabby tents, at the mercy of nincompoop leaders encashing your misery and bribe-seeking babus? And seeing your daughters growing up too sudden and finding no place to hide your shame?
No KJ would ever come forward to make a movie, a telling, spine-chilling narration on the celluloid, of five-year-old Seema, who saw her parents and brother being slaughtered by a butcher’s knife in Doda. Because her dad was not Mr Khan. He was one Mr Kaul.
Sorry, Mr Kaul and your entire ilk. I can’t help you.
It’s not fashionable to side with those who are Kauls. And Rainas. And Bhatts. Dismissively called KPs. KPs means Kashmiri Pandits. They are a bunch of communalists. They were the agents of one Mr Jagmohan who planned their exodus so that Khans can be blamed falsely. In fact, a movie can be made on how these KPs conspired their own exile to give a bad name to the loving and affectionate Khan brothers of the valley.
To voice the woes of Kauls is sinful. The right course to get counted in the lists of the Prime Minister’s banquets and the President’s parties is to announce from the roof top: hey, men and ladies, I am Mr Khan.
The biggest apartheid the state observes is to exclude those who cry for Kauls, wear the colours of Ayodhya, love the wisdom of the civilisational heritage, dare to assert as Hindus in a land which is known as Hindustan too and struggle to live with dignity as Kauls. They are out and exiled. You can see any list of honours and invites to summits and late-evening gala parties to toast a new brand. All that the Kauls are allowed is a space at Jantar Mantar: shout, weep and go back to your tents after a tiring demonstration. Mr Kaul, you have got a wrong name.
A dozen KJs would fly to take you atop the glory – posts and gardens of sympathies if you accept to wear a Khan name and love a Sunita, Pranita, Komal or a Kamini. Well, here you have a sweetheart in Mandira. That goes well with the story.
And you pegged the movie plot on autism.
I wept. It was too much. I wept as a father of a son who needed a story as an Indian. Who cares for his autistic son, his relationship with the western world, his love affair with a young sweet something as a human, as someone whose heart goes beyond being a Hindu, a Muslim or a proselytizing Vatican-centric aggressive soul. Not the one who would declare in newspaper interviews: “I think I am an ambassador for Islam”. Shah Rukh is Shah Rukh, not because he is an ambassador for Islam. If that was true, he could have found a room in Deoband. Fine enough. But he became a heartthrob and a famousl star because he is a great actor. He owes everything he has to Indians and not just to Muslims. We love him not because he is some Mr Khan. We love him because he has portrayed the dreams, aspirations, pains, anguish and ups and downs of our daily life. As an Indian. As one of us.
If he wants to use our goodwill and love for strengthening his image as an ambassador for Islam, will we have to think to put up an ambassador for Hindus? That, at least to me, would be unacceptable because I trust everyone: a Khan or a Kaul or a Singh or a Victor. Who represents India represents us all too, including Hindus. My best ambassadorship would be an ambassadorship for the tricolour and not for anything else because I see my Ram and Dharma in that. I don’t think even an Amitabh or a Hritik would ever think in terms Shah Rukh has chosen for himself. But shouldn’t these big, tall, successful Indians who wear Hindu names make a movie on why Kauls were ousted? Why Godhra occurred in the first place? Why nobody, yes, not a single Muslim, comes forward to take up the cause of the exiled and killed and contemptuously marginalized Kauls whereas every Muslim complainant would have essentially a Hindu advocate to take on Hindus as fiercely as he can?
If you are Mr Khan and found dead on the railway tracks, the entire nation would be shaken. And he was also a Rizwan. May be just a coincidence that our Mr Khan in the movie is also a Rizwan.
Rizwan’s death saw the police commissioner punished and cover stories written by missionary writers. But if you are a Sharma or a Kaul and happened to love an Ameena Yusuf in Srinagar, you would soon find your corpse inside the police thana and NONE, not even a small-time local paper would find it worthwhile to waste a column on you. No police constable would be asked to explain how a wrongly detained person was found dead in police custody?
Because the lover found dead inside a police thana was not Mr Khan. No KJ would ever come forward to make a movie on ‘My name is Kaul. And I am terror-struck by Khans’.
Give me back my identity as an Indian, Mr. Khan and I would have no problem even wearing your name and appreciating the tender love of an autistic son.

Kolhapur (Maharashtra), February 19: Barely a week after the Pune terror blast, police in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district seized a large quantity of explosives and detonators and arrested three people, an official said.
Following a tip-off, police raided three different locations in and around in the district’s Devale village and recovered 70 kg of ammonium nitrate, 6,525 gelatin sticks, and 10,225 detonators.
Besides these, police also recovered assorted items like wires, trigger mechanisms, all totally valued at nearly Rs.100,000, assistant police inspector B. Chauhan of Karvir police station in the district, around 450 km south of Mumbai and around 175 km from Pune), told IANS Friday evening.
In last week’s Pune terror blast, the key components of the bomb were ammonium nitrate and RDX which was suspected to be triggered off by a remote device.
Three people, all hailing from Rajasthan, have been nabbed for possessing the material which can be used to make and trigger explosives, Chauhan said. They have been identified as Kishen Bhairu Choudhary, 30 of Bhilwara, Mohanlal Kanudas Vaishnav, 32, and Jamnalal Kanudas Vaishnv, 30, both from Chittor.
They have been charged under the Explosive Substances Act, various sections of the Indian Penal Code and other laws.
Their associate – Badrilal Devaji Choudhary of Bhilwara – is absconding and a hunt is on to trace him.
The trio will be brought before the district court Saturday morning, and further investigations have ben launched, the official said.
