Culture, conservation in Toronto – ideas and plans

My dear [cyber-]friend Shaheen Sultan has sent this interesting email. Those who are interested in helping her with the cultural and conservation efforts can either contact me or leave a comment here. In particular, truck art and other ideas for this haven in Toronto (Raza)
My friends  and I are in the midst of compiling a future project for Art and Culture restoration and conservation -- an initiative very dear to my heart, as I have always believed in conserving cultural heritage so the generations to come shall benefit from global cultures where they are becoming endangered with exploitation and falling prey to decadence due to the age of modernity. No, I do not scorn "modernity", but, I do not endorse the opinion that world culture becomes extinct with the arrival of technology and IGeneration.
We have found a reasonable space in Toronto to construct a gallery / world cafe lounge to cater  a permanent venue to dialogue on art, culture, restoration and conservation. The aspiration is to have three levels of the building (it is actually a house that is 30 years old with high  ceiling) -- the bottom level would be a "world" lounge-- which shall designed as a global village and shall serve ethnic food. Middle level shall be a music lounge opened to the public from 5:30 p.m - 11:30 p.m for jazz and blues music performed by underground musicians as live band. The third floor is the actual conservation space -- where indigenous art and carvings of North and East Africa's Makonde, Mughal shoes, Buddhist rock art, Pakistani truck art dating back to the early 1920's a tradition that the crafts-people adorn their trucks with artworks, et al.... Conservation space shall cater to Indian classical music and books that are obscure in present day.
Now, more specifically, I turn to my friends in South Asia to share some resources of the truck art pieces -- especially, kettles and teapots. If you are able to guide me to the approriate parties, i shall be grateful.
Very exciting times await !! I went to see the building space this noon, it is stunning. the outside of building construction is red bricks --- which gives a rather renaissance finish. We are hoping to commence architectural design and have the space open by June 2010.
If you have any idea you want to share -- do not hesitate -- as it is always to have greater minds than one mind. The point should be of cultural historic value furnished with the idea of conservation that can attempt a dialogue with global village and incept art sensibilities depicting tradition and heritage.
Cheers,
Shaheen

  1. Hi Raza, Shaheen,
I share your concerns about the fragility of culture when faced with the might and seemingly dispassionate growth of modernity. Like you I have no axe to grind with the inevitable technological development of humankind, but in its wake one can often see the badly bruised remains of culture heritage. The loss of cultural and cultural heritage can be a subtle affair but the world still loses a little piece of itself, its history and identity; as we march towards progress and a cultural uniformity that seems to look, feel and taste the same for everyone; if you’ve been to one shopping mall, you’ve been to them all.

So the preservation of cultural identities is something that I, like you, believe will keep us connected to some truly amazing experiences that our respective cultures have enjoyed for hundreds and in some cases thousands of years, experiences that produce a platform for communication and interaction between those of us who realise that the more we share, the more we understand each other and the closer we become.

I have joined Experience My Culture (www.experiencemyculture.com) for those very reasons (It’s a brand new site, all about culture). I have posted my cultural profile and I would like to read the profile of the Art and Culture restoration and conversation project. I think it’s a great idea, you should promote it through the EMC site. I look forward to seeing you there.
