Even today, many readers are shocked by his turn of phrase, little realising that this is no exaggeration on Manto's part, but indeed the way a section of society speaks. For me, his best story ever is "Toba Tek Singh'' which is a bitter, yet immeasurably moving, commentary on the issue of what we call ''homeland''. Naseeruddin Shah staged the wonderful play "Ismat Manto Haazir Hon" at NCPA in Bombay a few years ago. This play (not sure who is the author) brings out the irony of censorship, the question of a writer's intellectual integrity and gently hints at that amazing, if slightly tempestuous relationship shared by Manto & Ismat Chughtai.
