A great defense for the humanities! This subject is very close to my heart and i often reflect upon it. I have myself (many a time) underscored Math + Science. But do we program "nations". At a macro-level, this question is daunting. I think the first thing at the macro-level is to stabilise population figures. One-child-per-family is in sync with the times.... and after that level of stability is achieved.... i think there should be no "chasing" after professions. Leave it to the genius of the child to achieve his/her potential. That sums up my viewpoint (maybe i am wrong - this is open to argument). The problem is what about nations that are over-populated as of NOW., and may take 2-3 centuries to stabilise (as regards population). What to make of them now. It is poverty and LACK or shortage of opportunities that makes parents PUSH their kids into professions that pay well ! Eventhough the heart of the child may be "else-where". Islam defines this beatifully. God has endowed everyone with his/her RIZQ. What is this RIZQ. Its not a fast-food pizza sent 3 times a day. It is an inherent talent ingrained in every created human being... THAT must be recognised... and if the kid takes to THAT as a profession... he will excel. But when there are no / limited opportunities... that luxury cannot be availed. We need writers / painters / artistes / musicians... but as a society are we willing to pay them the same as a Heart Surgeon or a Nerve and Spine Surgeon ? Are we... If not ... why ? It is because the number of years put in by a Doctor are more... Is it because a person of a higher-intellect has devoted this many years... on this "dry" subject. Which subject is "dry" ... but for whom ? Education Planning is true nation building. I agree Singapore Model is wonderful... but then singapore is a small city-state.
