Bulleh Shah – on rejecting caste

A popular kafi of Bulleh Shah, sung by Abida Parveen "BULHE NU SAMJHAWAN AAINAN BHAINAN TE BHARJAIAN" earlier posted as " A stove is better than Bulleh" am posting its english translation thanks to Shahidain's invaluable contributions.

People discouraged Bulleh Shah from accepting  Inayat Shah as his master and said " Bulleh you are a scholar and a descendent of of prophet Mohammad (pbuh). Does it seem right to you to go to an ordinary gardener of low caste and become his disciple? Is it not embarrassing?" But Bulleh showed great love and reverence for his master and did not pay any heed to this objection.

BULHE NU SAMJHAWAN AAINAN BHAINAN TE BHARJAIAN

MAN NE BULHYA SADA KAHNA CHAD DE PALLA RAIAAN

AAL-E NABI AULAD-E NABI NUN TOON KION LEEKAN LAINAN

JEHRA SANOON SYED SADDE DOZAKH MILAN SAZAIAAN

JO KOI SANOON RAEEN AAKHE BHISHTEEN PEENGAN PAIAAN

RAEEN SAEEN SABHI THAEEN RAB DIAN BE PARWAAIAN

SOHNIAN PARE HATAIAN NE TE KOJHIAN LE GAL LAAIAN

JE TU LOREEN BAAGH BAHAARAN CHAKAR HO JA RAEEAN

BULHE SHAH DI ZAAT KI PUCHNA-EN SHAKAR HO RAZAAIAN

To counsel Bulleh, his sisters and sisters in law have come

Pay heed to us and give up mixing with the low caste Araeen

You are a scion of Ali,the Prophet, why must you shame our fair clime.

Those who call me Syed, are destined to hell made for them

Those who call me Araeen, have the swings in heaven laid for them

The low caste and the high caste, are created by God who cares not for family

He regards the beautiful and cherishes the not so comely.

If you wish to enjoy the glory of the Garden, go and serve the Araeen

Why bother about Bulleh’s caste? Obey the command that comes from Saeen

  1. Great! I’ve been listening to this for a while and had many confusions that have been cleared up now. Thanks for putting this up.

  2. DEAR RAZA RUMI, I REALLY LIKE YOUR articles that get published i n the times of india and the news international newspaper

It was only through your casteism essay in the Sunday TOI that i came to know that you edited Pakteahouse e zine.

I have a request: You please, be more conspicuous at PTH;that yasser hamdani is making a mess of your website. I personally admire Major(r) A H Amin, but in one of the recent posts, Yasser Hamdani scoffed at his capabilities and his ethnicity .He questioned about his carer in military and badmouthed him very badly. All this to a man who writes very brilliant military articles ………….YLH uses such patronizing and rude and vulgar tone that sometimes it becomes unbearable……and when one protests his misdemeanour, he deletes the comment.

If i am not wrong, yasser has his own blog hotel mohenjodaro; so please let him write only on that. You please become more visible on PTH.

Otherwise , if you keep things like these, please stop appending to your TOI columns that you ‘edit’ PTH,please write that you ‘co-edit’ (with yasser ) Pak teahouse.

  3. For example i wrote the following comment on PTH:

quote “@PTH admin, if i had used such boorish language , directed against AH Amin without any provocation, my comment would have been deleted immediately .Why is one o one your contributors allowed to do the same? why this bias?” unquote

and yasser deleted this comment of mine evrytime i tried to publish it on PTH.

Please free YLH of PTH responsibility.Please.
