Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri - March 16, 2009, originally uploaded by Jahane Rumi.

I was in Fatehpur Sikri a week ago. I love going there again and again. The place is calm and represents architecture that can be easily described as frozen music.
This entrance is close to the shrine of the Sufi saint Salim Chishty - there are countless graves of Mughal era - mostly of the disciples of the great Saint whose best known follower was Emperor Akbar.
This was a spring afternoon and therefore an appropriate time to visit the place. But I am not happy with my visit. it was too short.
I will return.

  1. The one place that I missed during my trip in Feb…:(

  2. You will, Insha-Allah! :)

I’ve been there, but only once. What I liked about the architecture was that the structures were ventilated in such a way that there would be no need for air-conditioning even at the peak of summer, like many other buildings dating back to that period that I’ve been to. Quite amazing really!

I’ve read that the place had to be abandoned because of lack of natural sources of water, which is such a pity, since it is all so beautiful.

  3. This is one of my favorite places too! The quiet and serenity that it houses besides being an architectural wonder is what draws me to it even if it is often times only in the realms of my mind or vicariously through moments captured on camera. The burnt orange and the rust maroons lend a calm and an innate depth to the monument. Fatehpur Sikri lingers on in my mind even today almost like an unforgettable tune even though it is the beauty of the Taj Mahal that awes and humbles me when I visit Agra.
Raza, was this your first visit there?

  4. i do hope you are back there again- i would adore to go there one day, too. do share more photos with us. best wishes, shayma
