This reminds me of Mahabharat when both sides were heading towards war. In Rumi's writings I see the wisdom of Saga Vidur who tried his best to tell the truth. Unfortunately, power blind rulers have no respect for Vidurs and Rumis. Outcome of every war had the same story. Vidurs and Rumis are people of wisdom and never force their views on any one. Where as Duryodhanas, Ravans, Zias, Yahyas etc silence any differing voice through force. Silent majority just wait like goats to be butchered. This has been the world ever since man descended on Earth and will remain so till Mother Earth goes infertile and stops bearing children. Wise people like Rumi will be there to tell the truth and Ravan like rulers blinded their power will never heed the advice. Result will be same. Then history will be written... However, no lessons. There is a saying;” Wise people never require advice and fools never take it”. Therefore again coming back to what Lord Krishna said in Mahabharat (Geeta ), “ whatever has to happen, will happen. We should be ready for more destruction in south Asia. My dear friends, it will happen. I see all the signs of it. We Rumis can see it coming...

An apology would be a beginning but what about the role ISI is still reported to be playing in Bangladsh in order to take revenge upon India in its North eastern states by fuelling infiltration and insurgencies? An apology would be meaningful if this exploitation of Bangladesh could be halted....

"All is not lost. We have, at the end of the year 2008, a growing middle class, urbanised pockets of civic action, and fortunately a democracy of sorts. No foreign power has prevented us from reopening the issue of land reform, taxing the super-rich, investing in education and healing the festering wounds of Balochistan?"

very true..

i dont know who can answer this but what couldn't understand is Indians and pakistanis are similar people with similar background but then what happen after 1947 is completely different. both jinnah and gandhi died soon after freedom but even after gandhi's assignation india evolved into secular nation with tolerance for corrupt politicians and found ways to some of great institutions & business house.
why this wasn't the case for pakistan is beyond my imagine? infact its hard for india with more challenges/difference within thus making things very slow but pakistan could have moved ahead in every single area (education, business, poverty/economy, et..).
i don't know why this wasn't the case. i strongly believe if pakistan had evolved into better (or similar) to india then both countries would be enjoying great relationship.

Very well written. Last para says all:

"We ought to apologise to our Bangladeshi friends, and begin a new era of honesty. After all these years, what stops us from making Pakistan and Bangladesh visa-free countries for students and visitors and trade partners? Let us begin to tackle history, for a change."
