The Congress rejected it and Partition assumed an inevitable uncontrollable dynamic.</i> Nationalism as someone said is the measles of the masses. But in the subcontinent it is a disease amongst the elite and the middle class. For the poor farmer, wether he is in the NWFP or in Bangladesh or in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, these things are secondary. So if you go back to the blame game of partition, it was simply politics at its best (or worst) and neither side has anything honorable to show for. Thankfully, this attack came when there is a sane(r) government in power in India which wasn't itching for confrontation, though perhaps its very survival is in doubt. This will not be a zero sum game of Who will win? but just of Who will not lose? I hope both sides take these comments in their stride and get on with what needs to be done.
