She sparks up controversial issues in order to market herself well! People buy her books to find out what she has to say and what others have to say about her. For all the people I know…everyone despises her!
She’s a perfect example of that individual…who believes that popularity is gained through controversy…if it makes you rich…then well and good.
She makes me sick!

I don’t quite agree with A roys arguments as they are biased and thought from a particular angle.Gender and nationality are not the issue.She need to put her thoughts from a wider point of view.

Id: you are right in a way but A Roy has built quite a media profile through advocacy against bog dams, speeches at the world social forums and of late Kashmir. Corporate media misquotes or spins her as this anti-development, not-so-Indian lunatic…

And there is a lot that is written about her and said on TV channels; often in a negative light..

but in a general sense you are right

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many of us who either ‘love’ or ‘hate’ Ms. Roy have read one or more of her writings…

As for me besides “The God of Small Things”, I may have perhaps read an article or two of hers in NYT or Guardian on anti-globalization …

Those two extreme positions of ‘love’ and ‘hate’ presuppose a close and extended interaction with the recipient of that reaction, or so I believe…

Even if Arundhati Roy were to “Wear saris, …stay at home, have babies, grow her hair long and start plaiting it.” and still write what she does about controversial issues, she would invoke the same reactions, I believe.

The reactions would, in fact, be exactly the same even if Arundhati Roy were a man and not a woman, in my opinion.

Perhaps, the section of lumpenised urban middle-class doesn’t like her. Nice article though I find the sentence unnecessary:

First, there is the macho male response to a woman who is not just brilliant and beautiful, but is also blessed with a talent for turning out powerful prose.

I don’t understand why this has become a fashion to say that men feel threatened from intelligent women?

Arundhati Roy represents the voice of the silent indian, who cannot articulate himself/herself.. i.e. 70 percent of the dumb and “goonga” India. Thru her writings, aspirations of the unfortunte 70% Indians find utterance. They have not read her.. do not know who she is.. yet.. her voice echoes their sentiment. Arundhati was destined for a very high life. People who move around in malls… rank consumers buying all the time… trying to make an “impact” (attention deficiency syndrome); can never understand what truly HIGH LIFE is.

She is an honor for India. Arundhati Roy is one of India’s finest daughters. Arundhati represents the humane… the softer… the beautiful side of what the idea of India could be all about. She is pitted against the Modis / Babu Bajrangis / Vanzaras / killers of Graham Staines + those who burn Nuns. She speaks against the 700,000 Indian Military posted in Kashmir; that has a population of 70 lakhs. (Male Population: 35 lakhs… in other words… 1 soldier for every 5 male citizens). She is pitted against a State that builds dams that dislocated 30 millions ! (Left to their own Gods !) She is pitted against the Courts that play with words… in a jargon alienated from the common man… who experiences shock and awe !

Arundhati Roy is an intellectual of the highest calibre who continues to speak the truth against all odds… “Haq-goi mein khatra-e-daar-o-rasann to hai” (Speaking truth invites its own dangers !)… said Kaifi Azmi. But the free soul never surrenders to fear… Her book of essays must be posted for FREE on the internet so as to have MAXIMUM reach. Infact i would go to the extent and say, that her book must become a standard text book (Non Detailed) for “A” Levels.. or for the under-graduate courses., throughout India.

The RSS hate-speech/literature has poisoned the indian subconsciousness. Arundhati Roy is the “CLOROX” vis-a-vis the RSS stains of hatred.
