I've researched lot of features of Qalandar. These people have highest place in Sufism. You can say if Ghous is king of time then Qalandar is king of kings.

Allah gives them special powers; they can burst the sky and flat the earth in a matter of seconds.

Till now, 2.5 Qalandar arrived. Allah knows best what could be the reason of very few numbers. Based on powers, my Murshad said once, only one Qalandar is enough for entire era till Day of Judgment. But it his mercies that he has given such a powerful support in a form of 2.5 Qalandars to Sufis like us. Furthermore, one more Qalandar is expected in this century.

I have listened to verses praising him, in Punjabi (various versions of 'Dum Mast Qalandar', performed by various artistes), which I like quite a bit. :)

Irfan Saheb: Visiting the shrines and attending the Urs celebrations is symbolic, cathartic and cultural. The most important part is to internalise the message and the teachings of the Sufi poets.

Cubano: thanks for sharing this legend. I have also heard this one - do send me the reference. These traditions are oral and part of the cultural often allegorical stories that generations pass on.
I also wish to visit Sehwan - :)

Interesting post. I was just reading about Lal Shahbaz Qalandar last night. There's an interesting legend about the Manghopir crocodiles that is also related to Lal Shahbaz. According to that legend, the crocs originated as lice in Lal Shahbaz Qalandar's hair. He gave them to Manghopir as a gift. He placed them in the Manghopir pond and they turned into crocodiles. :)

Reporetedly, the largest gathering of fakeers in the world takes places at the annual urs in Sehwan. I would love to see that urs one day.
