Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sings Bulleh Shah

I had earlier posted a video of Abida Parveen singing Bulleh Shah. While that is an all time favourite, the global voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has also rendered Bulleh Shah with great ease and soulfulness. I am grateful to Cubano for opening the doors into this magical world of music. No words can capture the sheer beauty of this music. Videos are posted below

  1. indeed, words cannot describe this. intro of this classic qawali points out to people relying on rituals than search for Truth within themselves; there is a lesson in this against religious orthodoxy and brainwashing of young people that we see happening around us with deadly consequences. thank you very much for posting this…. there is, btw a part 3 of this qawali on your link that you are able to view….nee main jana jogee day naal merges into akheeyan udeekdeeyaan..what more can one ask for

  5. A classic qawali. No wonder his kalam has been a favourite chioce for the group of Qawwals. The essence of Bulleh Shah teachings was the universal tolerance. His writings are alive with themes of love, peace, reflection, generosity and faith – in simple peasant metaphors. His Kafis, Dohras have been kept alive, by contemporary singers, in the hearts and souls of the common men both in cities and in villages but the only problem arises, is the authenticity of the original kalam as it has been observed that the singers have the tendancy to add the stanzas/refrain to the original kalam to suit their performance.

  6. For Naveed

Hope that you have seen the translation of “Umara lageya pabha bhar” as desired by you.

  7. shahidain, i have seen your translation and have a left a message as well. Thank you.

You are absolutely spot on about kafi singers singing kafi by one sufi poet & then add refrain from other poets. When punjabi/seraiki singers do this, and borrow from the same language, it perhaps, musically, enhances the impact but dilutes the content of the kafi itself. I have listened to some Shah Hussain kafi’s performed by Abida in which she inserts Kabir. Infact it is pretty consistently observed that the intro of the kafi (or qawali) is from one poet & the main kafi from another.
