Dear Shaheen ji, If you listen to Gauhar jaan and Janki bai then you MUST visit Kolkata-- there is a teasure trove of old recordings there in an small archive run bu a friend of mine. And the city is full of people who love music and learn and just enjoy it-- apart of course form the very good performances. Truly hope to meet-- so much to share! I'd love to see your paintings of courtesans-- and the others too. I am of course specially interested in the courtesans, their music. They were the custodians of this entire repertoire . Alas both their old graceful way of life and the subtle gayaki is fading.
Raza, thank you for all the wonderful pieces on this blog-- and also for putting people in touch with each other. That is such a blessing!

Vidya ji, We shall meet in this circle of life. And...it would be an absolute joy to hear you sing raagas. Sometimes I listen to raaga's whilst painting, and believe it or not, they are very old - Gauhar Jan, Janki Bai, et al... (obscure to today's generation...hope I'm not sterotyping!!!). I paint courtesans, socio-political issues, figuratives.

Keep inspiring and ignite the flame.

But...Raza, thank you for delighting us with a medly of intellectual and fun articles!

Shaheen, thank you for your kind words. I'd love to see your work too-- painting? I too really like Iqbal Hussain's work-- he
captures the strength and pathos, and the brittleness of the women's lives. And yes do contact when you are in Delhi-would love to meet. I live in Delhi, but travel a lot to Kolkata-- which is indeed a fascinating city. You must visit there too.

Vidya, trams did run in Delhi. If you walk in certain parts of the old city, you can see the tracks. In fact, the Delhi government is considering the possibility of reviving them again.

Vidya, wow! Enjoyed reading the content.... I must visit Kolkata! My interest as a visual artist (if i can claim to be one?), documenting parts of Kolkata would be absolutely thrilling. You write beautifully.....and I am aware of your Thumri renderinga as well.

Also, Iqbal Hussain's paintings - as usual are intriguing...and can anyone tell me who the subject is on the second photograph?

And Vidya ji, Keep inspiring us all with your knowledge and musical treat ! And would love to meet you in India on my next visit!!!

No problem, Vidya. But just for the record, it was you who brought the kajri angle to this blog. That's what I was trying to point out with my reference to crossed wires :-) .

Ah yes, sorry! well if the Malwa Kabir singers can sing of Ram naam ka ticket kat ke.... etc, referring to trains, why not a kajri with trams. Actually there probably is one. there are several, as you know with hotal-vas (hotel) and goondas. And there is the famous dadra-- badla lai hu adaalat mein. Ok --hereafter these essentially kajri-related conversations not on this blog.

Vidya,

PS: Your full sentence is, "Kolkata must be the only city in India where trams still run." There is a slightly speculative tone to that "must be" which I endorsed, that's all.

Hi Vidya,

My pleasure. It's YOU who should read more carefully :-) . Without using quotation marks, I have indeed acknowledged your use of the phrase 'where trams still run'.

I'm afraid you've managed to cross wires ("As you sadi -- lost opportunity for a Mirzapuri kajri). That, I'm afraid would be lost on people here. But since you've brought it up, how would "Balamwa tram ma gaeelwa" sound in Pilu or Des?

And all of you, please do visit that "Tram Views of Asia" website.
