All friendships you transcend…

Filed under: All My Posts, Poetry, Rumi, Sufi poetry, Sufism — RR @ 6:48 pm

I need a lover and a friend
All friendships you transcend
And impotent I remain

You are Noah and the Ark
You are the light and the dark
Behind the veil I remain

You are passion and are rage
You are the bird and the cage
Lost in flight I remain

You are the wine and the cup
You are the ocean and the drop
While afloat I remain

I said, “O Soul of the world
My desperation has taken hold!”
“I am thy essence,” without scold,
“Value me much more than gold.”

You are the bait and the trap
You are the path and the map
While in search I remain

You are poison and the sweet
You are defeated and defeat
Sword in hand I remain

You are the wood and the saw
You are cooked, and are raw
While in a pot I remain

You are sunshine and the fog
You are water and the jug
While thirsty I remain

Sweet fragrance of Shams is
The joy and pride of Tabriz
Perfume trader I remain.

  1. Is this an original composition? If not, who is the poet? Either way, it is certainly a striking work.

  3. AJIT… read RUMI… You will find his Mathnavi-e-Manavi (in 2 volumes) translated into English by Prof. R.A. Nicholson (Cambridge). Spend 6 months or a year to read it. Consider it a journey.. and then you will know who and what Rumi is. Consider it a gamble… read Rumi… and you are transformed ! (Of course, the intent should be good. If you open a book with pre-conceived hatred, it wont work. Rumi can enter a Heart only if it is hate-free ..). The receptacle (heart) has to be pure.

  4. Lucidity at its best: juxtapositioning of dimetric opposites and the complete irrelevance of that opposition to the ‘I’

You are the leader and the traitor
You are the infidel and the believer
    Yet the creator I remain.
