Bulleh Shah on dogs
Read the symbol-laden verses of Bulleh Shah with the translation contributed by Shahidain:
RaateeN jaageyN kareyN ibaadat
RaateeN jaagan kuttey teython utey
bhonkanon band mool naa hundey
jaa ruree tey suttey, teythoN uttey
khasam apney da dar na chhaddey
bhaaweyN so so wajjan jutey
Bulleh shah kooee rakht weyhaaj ley
baazee ley gaey kuttey tethoN uttey
———————-
You wake and keep praying throughout night
Dogs also keep praying throughout night
They are superior to you
They do not stop barking
and ultimately sleep on a dirty pile of waste
They are superior to you
They do not leave their master’s door even
if they are beaten by shoes.
Bulleh Shah! perform good deeds otherwise dogs will supersde you.
They are superior to you.

I love the slightly irreverant and in-your-face kind of attitude and humour evident in Baba Bulleh Shah’s poetry, which, to me, is very representative of the essence of being a Punjabi!
The message that he tries to send across to the readers always comes out loud-and-clear.

I’ve read a post quoting another excellent piece of his poetry at http://dharakhoh.blogspot.com/2008/02/je-rab-milda-nahateya-dhoteya-te-rab.html .

Please see if you can post this kafi in which Bulleh shah has nicely explained the Love beyond routine life. Such Love cannot be acheived until and unless you walk along the path of non material world. Only a Sufi who has no attachment with worldly life, can think so. His ultimate wish is an assimilation with the Creater. He raises himself above material goods or the material wishes of life.
Do check out a great rendition by Abida Parveen.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maeN peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee
Es tooney nu parh phookaaN gee, suraj aggan jalaavaaN gee.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maeN peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee.
AkhiyaaN kaajaal kaalay baadal, bhawaaN say aag laagaavaaN gee.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maen peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee.
Aur basaat naheeN kujh meri, joban dharee gundaavaaN gee
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maen peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee.
Sat samundar dil de andar dil se lehr uthaavaaN gee.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maen peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee.
Bijlee ho kar chamak draavaaN, maen baadal ghir ghir jaavaaN gee.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maen peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee.
Ishak angeethee harmal taarey, suraj aggan charhaavaaN gee.
Tooney kaaman kar ke ni maen peyaara yaar manaavaaN gee
Na maen beyaahee na maen kawaaree, beyta goed khidaavaaN gee,
Toone kaaman kar ke ni maen pyaara yaar manaavaangi
laa makaaN dee patree baih ke, bulleh naad wajaawaaN gee.
Toone kaaman kar ke ni maen pyaara yaar manaavaangi
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved.
I will recite the words of spell and blow towards the Sun to light it.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved.
Black clouds will be the Kajal of my eyes; I will set fire with my eyebrows.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
If I have nothing else to do so I will return and twist my youthful body to attract my beloved.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved.
Seven Seas occupies my heart, I will raise tides from heart,
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
I will become lighting in order to terrify and I will thunder like clouds.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
Instead of Hermal (seeds) I will throw stars in the stove of Love and I will inflame the fiery Sun.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
Neither am I wedded nor will a maiden but I will mother a Son on my lap
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
By sitting on the path of non material world, I will blow the horn.
I will use enchanting and superstitious tricks to win over my Beloved
