Basically I was looking for Noor jehan's songs in Jugnu ( and had been looking for this very song " Aaj Ki Raat" without success) for a few days and I now have not only that pearl but also another one tha I am passionate about .. the subject of Sufism. Thank you Reza Rumi. I shall be a regular visitor Insha allh. I have workrd abroad most of my life but am now settled in Islamabad I consider myself extremely lucky to have ” wandered ” into this site. You are better placed... and if you find the text of the speech., paste it on your web-site. I have NOT read it.., but i was told by my elders that it is a classic. That essay, i am told was written while he was very ill and coughing.. (quite a scene)... but anyways, Maulana Jauhar.. when he sat down to write, wrote for hours... as if in a fit... and i am told he wrote that essay literally in a fit.. with his door closed.. fevreish body and tears welling... Choice of the Turks... try to dig out that essay, Raza... and paste it on the web-site. Jauhar's vision on SE Asia was superb and correct. He made Gandhi ji sit in the Carriage., and sat along with the Sa`ees - a symbolic gesture of accepting the fact that India was a Hindu-majority entity - and we were willing to accept them as brothers and partners. At the same time, Maulana Jauhar gave Azaan from the Congress Pandal.. .at times of Prayers. All the Hindu Delegates would move aside., as Maulana Jauhar would perform Imamat from the Stage of the Congress ! The British removed Maulana Jauhar from the scene... and the Congress snubbed him. Maulana Jauhar, Azad, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai... all saw thru the dirty game the British were playing ! Khair. Part of it was adopted in film "Jugnoo" (1947) and sung by Norr Jehan. Noorjehan and Sehgal are the "Original" play-back singers ! Everyone after them copied some part of their art... but Noorjehan and Saigal were pioneers in playback singing. Another gr8 song by Noorjehan in Jugnu is rendered equally wonderfully and it goes this way : "Hame`in to shaam-e-gham mein.. kaat`ni hai.. zindagi apni !" and of course the famous : "Yahan badla wafaa ka be-wafaa`i ke sivaa kya hai ? " with Rafi is immortal. Probably Jugnu's music was by Naushad Ali Saheb Lucknowi., and lyrics.. i am very sure.. it is NOT Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Probably it is Behzaad Lucknowi... (its a guess !) You are probably right. I looked thru Nuskha Hye Wafa and saw only one “Aaj ki rat saaz-e-dard.”

It was my mistake. I was thinking of Surood-e-Shabana, which has two versions. Person who gave me the recording (copied from 8 track, cassette, God knows what) never claimed that both (There are two in this clip) were by Faiz. It was my assumption. Nevertheless, it is from that gathering.
