They had an intense relationship in which Rumi fell in love with Shams - Rumi's family became jealous and ultimately Shams left Konya. He was brought back as Rumi went almost mad with grief. But this was a short lived union as it is believed that one of Rumi's son murdered Shams. Rumi was heartbroken, he gradually recovered but Shams had chnaged his life. I suggest you read a highly readable novel: "the way of love" by Nigel Watts which explains a lot about this relationsip. Farhan Mian
