Each one of us has a personal story connected with this great writer's work.as if we became characters in an unwritten script of Qurutal-ain hyder. emitting the same emotion, meeting the same unrequited ending, dying somehwere alone each day. sense of being on our own seems mitigated in this posthumas outpouring of affection for her. I have no words to express what her books did for me and what they still mean to me even after reading them over and over again.as if myself, her books, a certain person, time and place became irrevocably woven in a seamless circle. by now you know that you are not alone in mourning her death. I will now look to buying her books in English. Living in an Imperialist country, I of course had never heard of her. So many great world writers pass unknown to the self-obsessed West, it is a shame. Ya Haqq! May Allah bless her soul and give her peace. I will now look to buying her books in English. The photo you have published was taken by me in 2005. When I went to meet Hyder, she was initially extremely unwilling to be photographed. Hence the quote. She had been photographed ten years earlier by Prashant Panjiar, of which I tried to remind her, since I had been asked to go back and photograph ten great cultural figures across India, that had been profiled earlier in the magazine. Hyder was wonderful. She fed me lunch and asked many questions. I ended up spending the afternoon with her and her visiting nephew. Best, G Hello,
