My introduction to Indonesia began few years back in V S Naipual's elegant but flawed travel book "Among the Believers". Your story suggest that extremism in Java is only a transient phenomenon. But Mr. Naipual had described the same place as a region which was nothing less than the very fountainhead of Islamist extremism. I hope you are right. I have so much more to write on this place. The TFT put a word limit on my endeavour so I had to be brief. But I will write more. When I saw the ash rain all over the city, I could not believe it and just came up with a poem - alas that I did not write down and therefore remains somewhere jumbled in my fading memory.. Mystic: I was there some time ago. Dear friends

I almost felt as if I was there. Jogja has been at the top of my travel list for some time, I've always wanted to go and visit the temples there and hope one day I will. You describe it as I imagine it to be like. What a wonderful post, and very well written. I almost felt as if I was there. It was interesting to note how isolated but essentially localized populace of Indonesia keeps struggling to stick to their ancient roots despite persistent onsluaghts of external cultural and religious influences! really impressive insight into similar strands exisitng in the south asian neighborhood. As is evident by your write up, I was most impresed with the way nature blessed indonesia in so many ways like picturesque mountains etc. Wow…what an exciting trip!
