The anguish of Bahadur Shah Zafar

The last of the Mughal Emperors - Bahadur Shah Zafar - died in exile after the 1857 War of Independence. He was a gifted poet and a patron of struggling artists in Delhi. I found a translation of his famous ghazal. Full entry here >>

  1. Pl add the “Maqta” Raza which probably sums up the tragic life of the Emperor!
ITNA HAI BAD-NASEEB ZAFAR DAFN KE LIYE
DO GAZ ZAMEEN BHI NA MILI KOO-E YAR MEN

The poet was not allowed to be buried in Delhi and his mortal body was carried to Rangoon where his last resting place is.

  2. I have always admired and sympathized with Zafar, a remarkable man who is quite insensitively derided by some as a decadent. I wish such observers could turn their critical attention to Aurangzeb who undid so much.

    Keep posting!

  3. this was probably his best ghazal. i don’t know much more than the basics of the history of the last mughal emperor but the most interesting stories about his court, to me at least, are the poetic squabbles of zauq and ghalib.

    like your blog dude. :)

  4. It is definitely a great ghazal.

  5. Dear Bloggers,
Great grand daughter in law of Bahadurshah Zafar, Sultana Begum resides in India’s West Bengal state at 103/12/C, Foreshore Road, Shibpur, Howrah-711 102 (West Bengal) India. Her phone number is 98319-32545, e-mail is : moghulbegum@yahoo.co.
Although there are many branches who claims to be descencents of Zafar, but only Sultana Begum is recognised by the Govt. of India as Zafar’s great grand son Mirza Mohammed Bedar Bukht’s wife. Bedar was born in Rangoon (now Yangoon). She is getting political pension but the amount is very meagre. She needs financial help.
